Pitman began in 1871 as a Methodist camp meeting ground, and the plan of that camp is still the plan of the town. Pitman Grove’s avenues radiate out from the central tabernacle, and the cottages along them started as tents on wooden platforms before being built out as permanent small houses — narrow, tightly spaced, heavily trimmed with scrollwork and gingerbread, and fitted with small windows sized for a summer cottage rather than a year-round home. As the borough grew beyond the Grove through the early twentieth century it added foursquares, bungalows and Colonial Revivals on more conventional lots, and postwar building filled the rest.
