Alloway has a claim no other town in the country can make: the first successful glass factory in America was established here in 1739, when Caspar Wistar set up his works on Alloway Creek and began producing bottles and window glass for the colonies. The works are long gone, but the village that grew around the creek and the mills is still there — brick and frame houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lining the main road through the village, with farmland and creek bottom in every direction beyond it. It is a quiet township of old houses, farm properties and very little new building. That combination means most of the glass in Alloway’s windows today is doing the same job it did a century ago, in openings built by hand long before anyone standardized anything.
Village and farmhouse work here starts with a survey of the building’s stages — which part is original, which is later, and what survives in each. Units are built to the actual openings, with proportions matched where they face the road. Early glass is identified and discussed before anything comes out. Creek-side elevations get their sills and lower rails checked first, because that is where the damp does its work.
We will come out to the village or the farm, look at every opening, and be honest about what still has life in it.
