Carneys Point was a farming district on the Delaware until a smokeless powder works opened here in the 1890s and the First World War turned it into one of the busiest industrial sites in the country. The plant needed workers, the workers needed houses, and the township built them fast — blocks of modest, uniform homes put up in the 1900s and 1910s, close together, plainly detailed, and glazed with the cheapest wood double-hung sash of the period. That stock is still a large part of the township. Around it are later houses: 1920s and 1930s frame homes, then postwar capes and ranches on wider lots, with the northern end of the New Jersey Turnpike and its first interchange running through the township. The company-era housing is now well over a century old and mostly on the windows it was born with.
Older company-era houses need units built to the opening and sightlines kept slim so a run of matched fronts still matches. Original counterweight pockets get properly insulated when the sash comes out — that alone changes how a room feels. Pre-1978 painted woodwork is contained. On postwar houses and later additions, the work is more conventional: standard sizes, better hardware, glass chosen for the exposure.
We will look at the original part of the house and whatever was added later, and price them for what they actually are.
