Inwood occupies the last mile of Manhattan, a low valley held between two ridges of schist with Inwood Hill Park on one side and Fort Tryon on the other. It is the greenest ground on the island — the park holds Manhattan’s last old-growth forest and its only remaining salt marsh, and the Dyckman farmhouse of 1784 still stands on Broadway. The residential streets filled in later than most of Manhattan, largely through the 1930s, which is why so much of Inwood is Art Deco: six-story co-ops along Seaman Avenue and around Park Terrace, with brick-and-cast-stone entrances, casement-style steel sash on the stair halls, and deep courtyards. The hillside above Park Terrace keeps a handful of frame and brick houses, unusual in Manhattan. Almost all of it is heated by steam and glazed with single-pane wood that has been painted over for ninety years.
Inwood needs two different kinds of work and we do both. In the Art Deco co-ops that means custom units matched to the board’s approved profile, with insulated low-E glass behind a sightline that still reads as 1930s, and steel-replacement sections where the originals have gone. On the hillside houses it is ordinary domestic replacement done carefully on a steep site. Everything is measured to the opening, because nothing here is a standard size.
